When I was commissioned to compose a piece of music based on “I Corinthians 13” by the trustees at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, I chose also to write a composition inspired by the 100th Psalm (“Make A Joyful Noise”). Both were premiered on a program dedicated to a performance of my chamber music on October 29, 2000 in the Lady Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Patrick’s in New York City. When it came time for me to record this music I decided that the recording of five additional selections would make a meaningful presentation and representation of chamber music that I had composed during this three year period (1998 - 2001).
Each composition is a world unto itself. However, the neo-classical style of writing and the instrumental combination does suggest connections and influences that give this CD a unity of structure and intent. “Serendipity” suggests the random quality of some of the musical content just as “Metamorphosis” describes how I am, like my music, in a continuous state of change. A freely composed improvisation is explored in “An Afternoon Meditation” and the Paul Verlaine text “Il Pleure Dans Mon Coeur” inspired this contemplative song. The sensual quality of the alto saxophone depicts the sentimental mood behind “Romance” and completes this metamorphosis of musical ideas.
I wish to thank the fine musicians who helped bring these musical ideas to realization. My sound engineer, William Kinslow, deserves my heartfelt thanks for his musical insights, his mastery of recording techniques, and his enduring interest in my work. Also, I wish to thank Corey Squire, the talented young artist who was able to translate my ear for sound into a visual representation.
I hope that you hear within this music an integrity of intention, a clarity of vision, and an honesty of expression that will invite you to explore your own life’s metamorphosis.
